A Man, His Best Friend & Favorite Toy

Nikon D7000 18-125mm @ 35mm ISO 320 1/20 f/5.6 Lr4; PsCS6

I met this gentleman and his companion at the Santa Clarita Valley Corvette Club car show, October 16, 2010.  This was the first car show I had ever attended.  This image was originally rendered as an HDR, however, now that the thrill of discovering the HDR process has run its initial course with me, I can look at the HDR image and admit that the process, and the state of my skill level at the time that I originally processed it, were both sub-par. In actuality this image did not need HDR processing and it was diminished by poorly applied HDR processing.

I’ve spent part of the past week going back in my catalog and re-processing images, losing the bad HDR and improving the final renderings.  I’ll talk more about this in Wednesday’s post.

Binky Blue

Spring Car Show Season

Nikon D7000 18-200mm @ 38mm ISO 200 1/250, 1/60, 1/15 f/22 Lr4, HEP1; PsCS5

The scene is adjacent to the Red Robin in Chino, California where Binky Blue (2005 Corvette C6) and his proud owner took a lunch break after almost a full eight hours of display at Binky Blue’s first car show, the Corvettes West/Ronald McDonald House car show in Rancho Cucamonga, California, April 1, 2012.  If you would like to see Binky Blue up close and personal he plans to be participating at the Chino Valley Fire Foundation Car & Bike Show, Saturday, May 19, 2012 at The Shoppes in Chino Hills, California.

White On Blue 1961 Corvette

Car Show Fortnight

Nikon D7000 18-135mm @ 28mm ISO 800 3-bkts f/16 Lr3; HEP1

This beauty is a classic design harking back to the Corvette’s origins.  This is a very close approximation of what “Todd Styles” and “Buzz Murdoch” would have been driving around the country in “Route 66” in 1961.  There is no shortage of white haired men at the Corvette shows, which is expected since very few other people could afford to have as a priority in their lives, acquiring and caring for a Corvette (classic or contemporary), but there still is plenty of life in both the entusiasts and the cars.  If you Google “Martin Milner” in Google Images you will note that if “Todd Styles” was still tooling around in a Corvette every day, he would also have silver hair, reality having caught up with the idealized life.

Black 1989 Vette

Car Show Fortnight

Nikon D7000 18-135mm @ 50mm ISO 800 3-bkts f/16 Lr3, HEP1, ASSA; PsCS5

A final black Corvette  that was captured at the Vette Set show in this series.  This is my favorite rendering of the black Vettes.  After HDR processing and tone mapping I converted the background layer in to a pencil drawing.

Black Vette #22

Car Show Fortnight

Nikon D7000 18-135mm @ 50mm ISO 800 3-bkts f/16 Lr3, HEP1; PsCS5

Another black Corvette at the Vett Set show in Redondo Beach, California.  There were 90 odd Corvettes on display that day.  I’ve got the “CHVZ” on the license play figured out, but have no idea what the “WY” represents.

Black Vette #7

Car Show Fortnight

One of at least a half dozen black Corvettes being admired at the Vett Set Car Show, Redondo Beach, California, June 11, 2011.

Blue Vette #16

Car Show Fortnight

Nikon D7000 18-135mm @ 32mm ISO 800 3-bkts f/16 Lr3,HEP1; PsCS5

This machine was on display at the Vette Set Car Show, June 11, 2011 in Redondo Beach, California.

Blue Chrome

Nikon D7000 18-135mm @ 58mm ISO 1250 3-bkts @ f/16 Lr3; HEP1

I captured just over 500 frames at the Vette Set show and this is probably my favorite of them all.  I feel with the tight framing of the “cockpit” and distinct images in the background, coupled with the HDR processing which brings out the interior details, that I have captured the essence of the allure of these machines.  It seems to resonate with other people, in less than a week this image has climbed higher than all other images I have shared on HDRSPOTTING.COM in terms of number of views.

I really was quite straight forward in terms of processing, from a clean capture through minimal post processing manipulation.  This is the kind of image I aspire to create on a regular basis.

Ruby’s Red Vette

Nikon D7000 18-135mm @ 24mm ISO 800 3-bkts f/16 Lr3, HEP1; PsCS5

I’m going with an automotive theme this week, and starting with this image captured at an all Corvette show held in Redondo Beach, California this past June.  The show was hosted by the Vette Set car club which is active in the L.A. area.  This was one of 90 Corvettes on display that day, and situated as it was in front of Ruby’s diner with the matching color scheme, the scene begged me to capture it.

I applied the usual processing to achieve an HDR image then created an adjustment layer in Photoshop for de-saturation and then selectively painted out the masking to reveal the original saturation.

Nikon D80 18-135mm @ 135mm ISO 160 3-bkts f/11 Lr3, HDR Efex Pro, Silver Efex Pro2; PsCs5

In the car culture of Southern California some car owners will go to any length to keep their pride and joy from acquiring any scratches or dings.

The f/11 setting helped keep the car and the signs in focus, I then added a layer in Photoshop with a Gaussian blur, then masked out the car and the signs to create a bokeh effect after the fact.  Silver Efex Pro 2 was used to convert to black and white, and then to selectively reveal the color in the signs.

Sexuality On Four Wheels

Nikon D80 18-135mm 32mm ISO 1250 1/45 f/9.5 (3 bkts) Lr3 HDR Efex Pro

A Corvette concept car displayed at an auto show at Ontario, California this past August.  HDR processed from three hand-held exposures in really poor lighting conditions in the main hall of the Ontario Convention Center.  I had a hell of a time with glare everywhere from some portable lighting they had brought in.  And despite all the glare the overall light output was really low and I had to really crank up the ISO.

SCVCC Fall Corvette Show – Part 2

Today’s post showcases images of the more contemporary Vette’s on display last week-end:

Nikon D80 18-135mm 18mm ISO 640 1/2 f/4.8 Lr3 Viveza2

“The Line-up”

“Corvette Sunset”

Nikon D80 18-135mm 50mm ISO 320 1/8 f/8 Lr3 HDR Efex Pro

“The Eye Catcher”

Nikon D80 18-135mm 32mm ISO 320 1/10 f/8 Lr3 Viveza2

“Red Love”

Nikon D80 18-135mm 18mm ISO 640 1/8 f/4,8 Lr3 Viveza2

“Evening Inspection”

Nikon D80 18-135mm 35mm ISO 320 1/8 f/11 Lr3 Silver Efex

“The Money Pit”

All images were captured hand-held, no effort was made to eliminate  the ghosting of the people in the frames.  Exposure, color brightness and saturation and contrast were manipulated using Lightroom 3, and NIK’s: Color Exfex Pro and Silver Efex Pro.  Noise reduction, sharpening and HDR processing were accomplished with NIK’s Dfine, Sharpening Pro and HDR Efex Pro.

SCVCC Fall Corvette Show – Part 1

Nikon D80 18-135mm 24mm ISO 320 1/30 f/11 Lr3 HDR Efex Pro

The Santa Clarita Valley Corvette Club is a well organized Corvette owners’ club in Southern California and they hold a fund raising car show every October to benefit The Painted Turtle, of which they state:

The Painted Turtle is the sixth addition to the Paul Newman’s family of Hole in the Wall Camps for seriously ill children. It is also the only multi-disease camp & family care center of its kind on the West Coast.

Through educational, therapeutic, safe & just plain fun summer camp, as well as year-round programs, The Painted Turtle provides a life-changing experience for children whose daily struggles often diminish both their desire to be well & their ability to lead a rich, productive life.

Judy and I had an enjoyable time at the car show this past Saturday.  Today’s posting showcases some of the vintage Vette’s that were on display.  Despite their age, these cars are in perfect physical condition and are immaculate inside and out.

Nikon D80 18-135mm 18mm ISO 320 1/30 f/11 Lr3 HDR Efex Pro

Another view of the vintage line-up, I really like the red and white color scheme of this car.  When I HDR processed these images with NIK HDR Efex Pro I used one of their tone mapping pre-sets and then tweaked it slightly in an effort to bring some warmth and softness to the image of the vintage cars on a fall day.

Nikon D80 18-135mm 35mm ISO 320 1/6 f/5.6 Lr3 HDR Efex Pro

I am calling this image “A Man, His Best Friend & Favorite Toy”.  He told me that the dog is usually reticent about getting in the car, but once he is in, he seems to enjoy the ride.  I certainly would.

All of these images are at a relatively high ISO, for two reasons, the light was fading, and everything was hand held. I have not tried to eliminate the ghosting in the first image (I am still getting my feet whet with the software tools), and what the hell, the people were walking around a lot and it required some patience until they would move out of the way of a given shot. The moving figures in the first shot were not a problem, the ghosting was effectively eliminated by the anti-ghosting tool in the Nik HDR Efex Pro application.
